A Sophisticated Social Networking Phone
Vodafone and Samsung have joined forces to create a phone that’s truly dedicated toward helping you keep in touch. Features include a brand new user interface, a Linux operating system, and a fairly powerful camera. However, you’ll need to be willing to sit down and figure it out, as a lot of the goodies are decidedly unfamiliar. Learning curve aside, you may find yourself slowed down significantly by the phone’s difficult touchscreen. This may very well be a turnoff for those who are used to phones that flow a little better.
Appearance:
At 136g, this isn’t a phone that will slip easily into your back pocket, but it’s not a brick either. Available in black or silver, this candybar is pretty sleek looking, with a big, bright 3.5 inch OLED touchscreen to boot. It also seems made of quality materials—no cheap plastic or fragile clicking sounds here. Unlike most phones, which feature a call button, a terminate call button, and some sort of directional key beneath the screen, this phone features three buttons that control events, applications, and contact lists. Rather than the usual array of features, your home screen is also largely centered more around your address list than anything else. If this fits with your priorities, this addition may work very well for you, but it takes a lot of getting used to. Additionally, you’ll find a button that activates a grid of frequently used icons, which can be useful if you want certain applications up close.
This leaves you depending mostly on the phone’s screen for accessing other features, which in most cases would be fine. However, the screen isn’t fast enough for rapid access. It’s not as resistive as some other phones, but if you’re used to being able to flip quickly from one application to the next or text at lightning speed, you may find yourself quite frustrated indeed.
Sound:
No complaints in regard to sound quality. Everything sounds crisp and clear, whether we’re talking, using the speakerphone, listening to music, or watching movies. Its 3.5 mm headphone jack also means you can use your favorite set of headphones without worry. You also have a variety of mp3 and polyphonic ringtones to choose from. That aside, its media player is compatible with a diverse range of formats. The FM radio was also a nice touch. However, there is nothing spectacular or revolutionary regarding sound.
Camera:
Social networking capabilities aside, the camera isn’t anything to sneeze at either. With 5 megapixels and a LED light, it should be able to take fairly accurate pictures in all sorts of settings. Its video recording capabilities are pretty powerful too. However, we did notice some blurriness, perhaps due to its lack of a real flash.
Internet Connectivity:
It makes sense that a phone dedicated to social networking would have a powerful connection to the internet, and this phone is no exception. It’s pulled out all the stops with 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and USB support. Along with the usual selection of SMS, MMS, and email, you also have access to Twitter, Facebook, RSS feeds, and more, allowing you to keep up with your buds no matter where you are. You can also arrange your contact lists with a variety of privacy settings and filters and even view your friends in real time locations thanks to the phone’s array of maps.
Memory and Talk Time:
With 16 gigabytes of memory, plus a microSD stick, you should have more than enough room to store your photos, music, texts, and other goodies. Also, for a phone that has such an enormous screen and wealth of battery sucking applications, the phone also lasts a fairly good while, with six hundred minutes of talk time.
Conclusion: This is the perfect phone for sociallites. Its enormous screen, camera, and powerful internet make it an ideal choice for many. However, its odd design and user interfaces may end up being too confusing for newer users.
