Compare and Buy The Best Sony Ericsson W910i Contract Deals
Sony invented the entire portable music phenomenon with the Walkman cassette player, almost exactly 30 years ago. In conjunction with Swedish phone giant Ericsson, they’ve reclaimed their stake in the field that they founded. The W910i is a lovely slimline full featured 3.5 G phone that does most of what you’d want an iPhone for, at a fraction of the price.
In technical specifications, it’s a nice lightweight 86 grams, about 12 mm thick and small enough to fit into the front pants pocket without distress. It’s a slide phone, which is a format I’m not fond of, but my daughter thinks is cool. That being said, our phone developed a hitch on the slider the third day we had it; we also got an early release candidate, and have been assured that it will be fixed.
The phone comes very well equipped with quad band GSM connectivity and HSDPA capabilities built in; Sony clearly wants people with this phone buying music wirelessly and does everything they can to make that intuitive, easy and simple. One gets the feeling that they’re trying to catch up with Apple with this.
The “beat Apple at their own game” mode is also apparent in the small things – the scroll wheel is probably just barely different enough to avoid a patent suit, while motion sensors (which are appearing in everything these days) will automatically rotate the image on the (very large) display from portrait to landscape, which is a nice feature.
Those motion sensors also give this phone its most notable and buzz worthy stunt. The ability to shake it forward and backwards to change what song is playing. In the lab, we found it to be a gimmick; again, my daughter disagreed. Myself, I was worried that it would trigger the shuffling when I jogged or sat down at the office.
As a phone, sound quality is quite good, and the buttons, though small, have adequate traverse to be usable. Again, I’m not personally a fan of the slider format, but the phone is quite good for what it does, and the display is lovely. Most of the user interface software is clearly run by Ericsson rather than Sony, which is greatly to the phone’s benefit. It’s absurdly easy to use.
