Sony Ericsson W760i mobile phone deals Walkman Phone Extraordinaire!

Sony Ericsson is undoubtedly on of the best in the business when it comes to mobile phone design and manufacturing. They have seemingly gained the edge over the competition time and time again over the last few years. Unlike other mobile companies that have tried to do it all, Sony Ericsson has relied on a tried and tested formula of focusing on one particular feature, whether the camera or the music functionality, and done it incredibly well. One of their latest offerings, the Sony Ericsson W760i, that focus is the music, but is the latest Walkman phone an asset or a liability to the range?

The Sony Ericsson W760i is one of the newest slider phones in the Sony Ericsson Walkman phone range. The vast majority of its predecessors have been extremely attractive and easy on the eye, and this handset is no different. It is not as slim as predecessors but then it does have more features packed in and so can be forgiven for that. It is more rounded with a dimpled panel at the rear of the phone and so is easier to hold and operate but yet somehow manages to avoid seeming bulky. Instead, the 2.2″ QVGA screen fits nicely into the phone without overpowering it and offers a 262,000 colour display that offers clear images and compliments the other features perfectly.

Speaking of the features, the list detailing them all is pretty impressive. Of course, every Walkman phone has an impressive music player, but the Sony Ericsson W760i also has a 3.2MP camera, state of the art satellite navigation system and 3G connectivity. As such, it goes much further than other similar mobile handsets from Sony Ericsson and actually rivals some of the Nokia handsets that are available at the moment.

The Sony Ericsson W760i does have some lovely touches, of which the GPS satellite navigation system is one. The directions are displayed on the excellent screen in full detail and draws on Google Maps. As such, you can easily find where you want to go on your phone. The music player is also of a high quality and has all of the feature you would expect of a Walkman phone

There are a few niggles as well, one of which is the absence of Wi-Fi. There is HSDPA available on the handset but many people feel far more comfortable using Wi-Fi so this is a bone of contention, as is the way in which you have to upload tracks from your computer. You do have to use an external Media Manager to do so and, although the software comes with the Sony Ericsson W760i, the time taken to carry this out may put you off.

One more niggle is the quality of photos taken using the Sony Ericsson W760i’s camera. They are generally of a good quality but many have found the feature to be temperamental. However, this was to be expected given that the phone is billed as a Walkman phone. If you want a phone to do a little bit and everything and do it well this will not phase you either, and that is exactly what the Sony Ericsson W760i does - a little bit of everything very, very well!
