A Slim, Stylish Touch Phone With a Feature Packed Camera
Affordable and attractive, the Sony Ericsson Vivaz is a lightweight little mobile with a sleek exterior and some truly interesting features, particularly when it comes to its 8.1 megapixel camera. However, its resistive touchscreen and unfortunate design make trying to use the phone an annoying and difficult experience.
Appearance:
The Vivaz certainly wins points regarding exterior design. At 98g, it’s light and slender without feeling flimsy. Its slight curve also makes it perfect for fitting against the palm of your hand, even if this limits its ability to fit in your pocket. Available in dark blue, metalic silver, berry red, and sophisticated black, you’ll be hard pressed to find a design you don’t like. Combine this with its massive 3.2 inch 16 million colour TFT HD touchscreen and you have a phone that is bound to turn a few heads.
Unfortunately, while it looks good, the design has its flaws. The battery cover is rather flimsy, and the placement of the camera makes it all too easy to accidentally take pictures of your fingers.

When it comes to the user interface, it is sadly outdated and clunky. Its Symbian S60 operating system is downright annoying. Slow and full of overly complicated functions, it’s difficult to use smoothly.
Camera:
The Vivaz’s 8.1 megapixel camera is definitely one of its shining gems, with autofocus, 4 x digital zoom, a flash, two dedicated camera buttons—one for snapshots and one for videos—an image stabiliser, and more. Also included is the ever popular picture geo tagging function. Photo quality is fairly good, but not the best we’ve ever seen, partially due to its rather puny flash. However, if you’d like to print out copies of your snapshots, the PictBridge option allows you to do just that. As for video recording, you are treated to its own separate video light, video streaming, and even video calling options.
Sound:
The phone’s sound quality is top notch as well, both for calling and listening to tunes. Its media player comes with a few goodies as well, including album art, PlayNow and TrackID. Also included is an FM radio, a Bluetooth Stereo A2DP, and MP3 and AAC ringtones. Best of all, Sony Ericsson didn’t skimp on the 3.5 mm headphone jack—this allows you to listen with whatever headgear you choose.
Internet Connectivity:
The Vivaz is destined to keep you connected, with 3G HSDPA, HSUPA, Bluetooth A2DP, EDGE, wi-fi, and more. Its quadband technology also allows you to use the phone regardless of where you travel. Also included are A GPS navigation, Google maps, Google search, web feeds, and a series of downloadable games. It’s also Youtube and Facebook compatible. As for texting, you get SMS, MMS, and instant messaging, but its slow, resistive touchscreen makes pecking out the simplest messages feel like an enormous hassle. Unfortunately, its predictive text does little to help with this.
Memory and Talk Time:
With 75 megabytes of memory, plus 16 gigabytes available on a microSD memory card, you have enough to cover the basics, but little else. In addition to this, its 13 hours of talk time and 430 hours of standby make it necessary to charge often.
Verdict:
While affordable, stylish, and equipped with a truly awesome camera, the Sony Ericsson Vivaz nevertheless falls short in a number of areas. However, if you can get past its clunky operating system and annoying touch screen, this phone may be worth considering.
