An Attractive, Eco-Friendly Phone With Interesting Features
As the world becomes more environmentally conscious, green phones are becoming more commonplace. In the case of Sony Ericsson’s Elm, you get a slim, feature packed little mobile with an awesome camera, a music player that’s packed with goodies, and much more. However, some of the additional features regarding the environment may be a bit too criticizing for some.
Appearance:
Like many green phones these days, the Elm is constructed with lots of earth friendly materials, including a water resistant exterior made of recycled plastic, nontoxic two toned paint, and finger friendly rubber buttons. Its 2.2 inch 262K colour touch screen is a bit small, but very crisp and bright. Users will also be pleased to discover its candy bar shape curves slightly, fitting nicely into the palm of the hand. This doesn’t make it as pocket friendly as the flatter phones, but it’s quite comfortable to hold nonetheless. At 90 g, it’s fairly light as well without feeling flimsy.
Its user interface is fairly simple, though there have been some complaints regarding some of the planet friendly applications. Its screen has a nifty energy saving function, but at times it takes the task a bit too seriously, resulting in the screen turning off when you still need it. Also included are some informational features, including a Green Calculator and an Eco Mate quiz, but both provide more of a guilt trip than anything truly useful. Fortunately, its slew of other amazing features may make up for having a phone that lectures you on regular intervals.

Camera:
Its camera is most impressive, with a 5 megapixel camera, 4 x digital zoom, autofocus, and flash. In addition to these basic necessities, it also comes with a few fun features such as Face detection, Smile detection, and photo geo tagging. You can also create photo feeds and send your pictures directly to the internet if you like. Also available is a PictBridge printing feature if you’d rather create physical copies of your snapshots.
Its flash could be a bit stronger, but the photo quality is fairly good. Though not something you’d want to replace your digital camera with, it nevertheless provides you with crisp, clear pictures that look great on the web. Its video recording capabilities are also fairly decent, with video streaming and video calling options.
Sound:
The Elm has a truly thoughtful set of features regarding sound quality. Along with a mustic player, FM Radio RDS, and Bluetooth A2DP connectivity, it also has a plethora of nifty playlist options, including TrackID, MegaBass, PlayNow, and SensMe. You’ll also enjoy a diverse selection of MP3, AAC, and polyphonic ringtones. Another neat feature is one that cancels background noise, which is useful if you’re calling while walking near traffic or in the middle of a busy food court.
The only downside to this little package is that there is no 3.5 mm headphone jack. In fact, its extremely limited propriety port results in slowing down your synchronising process as well, making transferring songs and other goodies to your phone an annoying hassle.
Internet Connectivity:
When it comes to keeping you connected, the Elm doesn’t skimp on features. Along with 3G HSDPA, wi-fi, Bluetooth A2DP, USB, EDGE, and others, users will also enjoy quadband technology and an AccessNet browser. It also contains tons of social networking widgets that would put many social networking phones to shame, including apps that allow you to access Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, and Myspace. While the keypad is initially a bit difficult to grow used to, the predictive text makes up for this somewhat. Also included are IMs, SMS, MMS, a basic email client, and various web feeds.
Other widgets and features include A GPS with Google Maps and Wisepilot navigation. Combine this with its aforementioned geo tagging photos and you have a phone that’s dedicated toward keeping you on track.
Memory and Talk Time:
Unfortunately, the Elm’s memory isn’t as spacious as other phones, with only 280 megabytes. However, a 16 gigabyte microSD card is enough to beef things up a bit. Fortunately, despite its wealth of features, its battery life is satisfactory as well,, with 430 hours of GSM standby and 10 hours of GSM talk time.
Conclusions:
With so many coveted goodies, this phone is an ideal choice for many. Its amazing camera and sound quality alone are enough to make any gadget lover drool. However, its lack of a 3.5 mm headphone jack and its fussy environmental widgets may prove too annoying for some. Regardless of this, it’s definitely worth a try.
