Simple, yet Stylish
The Samsung U800 is a sleek, slender candybar phone that manages to pack a variety of interesting features. Its practical user interface makes it a good phone for first time mobile users. Users who like a simple, affordable phone without lots of flashy gadgets will also enjoy the Samsung U800.
Appearance:
At 89g, it is light, slender, and able to fit almost anywhere, whether it’s a pocket or a handbag. Its casing comes in either silver or pink and features a beautiful two inch high definition touch screen with 16 million colours. The buttons are large and easy to press. Its chic metal keypad makes for wonderfully easy texting. The only drawback would have to be its casing, which tends to scratch a little.
Camera:
The Samsung U800’s 3 megapixel camera is decidedly mediocre in comparison to other phones, but it’s certainly useable. Featuring digital zoom and a LED flash, it has all it needs to get the job done. You’ll also find another CIF camera on the front of the phone that’s used for video calls. The U800 has a nice QCIF video recorder too, as well as screensaver and wallpaper options.
Sound:
The phone’s music player is top notch, with MP3, AAC, eACC+, and WMA as accepted formats. Combine that with an RDS issue FM Radio and ringtones available in polyphonic and MP3 formats, and you have a bare bones, reliable sound system that will suit your needs. Don’t expect anything flashy or new, however.
Connectivity:
The U800 boasts a delightful web browser as well as a snappy internet connection, featuring 3G HSDPA, Bluetooth, USB, EDGE, and GPRS as connection options. It also features SMS, EMS, MMS, all of which are combined with predictive text to make thumbing faster and easier. The document viewer allows you to read over and edit email attachments as well as personal documents. Its email interface is fairly simple, but easy to use. As for network connections, the U800 features a tri-band connection, with GSM 900, GSM 1800, and GSM 1900, allowing you to stay connected no matter where you are. Also featured for such purposes is HSDPA 2100.
Memory:
The U800’s memory storage is positively cavernous, with one gigabyte of stand alone memory. Add a microSD memory card and you have more than enough space to store email attachments, music, downloads, and documents. Its talk time leaves a bit to be desired at 3.4 hours, but its 400 hours standby time more than makes up for it.
Other goodies:
This phone features an option called “flight mode”, an feature that turns off the internet connection and the radio when activated, allowing for safe useage on airplanes. This means you can still listen to music and play games while still in the air. You can also access all of the usual convenient mobile phone goodies, such as your phonebook, organiser, calendar, alarm, calculator, and more.
Verdict:
The U800 is comparable to the Nokia Classic in terms of appearance and design, but it’s of our opinion that the U800 trumps the Nokia in that it has more space, a longer battery life, and video calling as well as several other exciting features. This is a phone that’s definitely worth checking out.
