Style Comes At A Price
One of the things that Korean mobile phone manufacturer can never really be accused of is designing an ugly phone. Whether it’s the clam-shell or sliding case approach, pretty much all of their handsets have usually been amongst some of the coolest designs around, and this shows no sign of abating with the Samsung U700. However, it’s not all good news…
At just 12.1mm deep, the U700 is an extremely slim handset, and it’s the phone’s small size that enforces the overall stylish feel of the unit. Despite its relatively thin appearance, the phone still feels solid enough, and even though it’s on of the slimmest models on the market today, it still packs a punch when it comes to features.
Coming with a high quality 2.2 inch QVGA LCD display that has a resolution of 320×240 pixels, text and menu features are well-defined. However, users have complained that the screen fades somewhat under bright sunshine, as well as being highly reflective, which is a bit of a letdown for such an impressive screen.
Another problem that the U700 has is that although the camera is a rather generous 3.2 mega-pixel, the actual quality leaves a lot to be desired, and is actually pretty fuzzy. Add to this the fact that you have to go through about three sub-menus to take a picture, and you wonder if Samsung’s designers were on a coffee break when this part of the phone needed doing. Video quality is also disappointing, which for a 3G videophone is surprising.
The U700 does redeem itself somewhat, though, when it comes to the other side of the multimedia coin. Although it doesn’t have an on-board FM radio, its MP3 playback is excellent, especially since it comes with the ability to arrange songs by genre, artists, albums, etc. Add to that the song information is displayed on screen, much like an i-Pod, and it’s a good recovery (although you can’t use any other feature while playing music, which is pretty disappointing).
The Samsung U700 also scores brownie points for its internet browsing – because it’s one of the newer generation HSDPA phones, access is fast and smooth, and comparable to using broadband on your home computer. It also supports the latest EDGA and WAP software, so the normal limitations for mobile phone web browsing don’t apply here.
The internal memory is pretty meager, too, at a paltry 20MB. Yes, this can be upgraded via a Transflash or microSD memory card, but even so, you would still expect more than 20MB on a phone that’s meant to be high-end, as the U700 is striving so hard to be. Battery life is reasonable, with 3 hours talk time and 9 days standby from the one charge.
Although it’s not a bad phone per se, the Samsung U700 is a little disappointing – it’s sleek looks promise something special, and unfortunately, it doesn’t live up this hype. However, now that it’s free on contract, the faults have a better chance of being overlooked by the stylishly tech-savvy.
