A Compact and Stylish Slider That Has All the Basics
The Samsung J700, or SGH-J700, is a compact beauty packed with just enough features for an entry-level phone. While not exactly high-end in terms of capabilities and price point, this small and chic model can sell itself just by being a looker.
The Samsung J700 is slide phone designed in a 99.5mm x 48mm x 14.8mm shell. When slid open, the unit becomes 135 mm long. It weighs 92g. It looks very sophisticated but offers a basic, user-friendly keyboard and navigation design. The buttons are generally well-spaced and will give you no problems, especially for text messaging. The round control pad on the front side also allows for quick and easy navigation, though it may not exactly be a wheel-type pad that you can glide your thumb on for cursor control.
The downside of smaller mobile phones, however, is limited screen size. The Samsung J700 only has a 2-inch TFT screen with 65k colours. This would not have been so bad if the model did not have web browsing capabilities. But alas, it does have GPRS and WAP. Apart from the small screen, the relative slowness of the GPRS connection makes browsing a bore.
For a small, inexpensive mobile phone, the Samsung J700 packs many features, although you’ll be getting what you pay for in terms of quality. For instance, the camera function is obviously on the low-end, with only 1.3 mega pixels and no flash. Basically, it takes pictures but, as can be expected, just not as well as higher-end models. You obviously cannot expect to see a lot of detail in your shots, especially where there is bad lighting. A good thing about the Samsung J700 though is that the camera lens is protected by the sliding back panel when not in use. Also, USB connectivity makes it easy to transfer pictures and other media files from the phone to the computer, or vice versa.
Other media applications of the Samsung J700 include a video recorder and player that support MPEG4 and H263 formats. It also has a competent music player, as well as an FM radio that can automatically tune in to 25 stations. Java and downloadable games likewise add to its multimedia functionality.
The Samsung J700 has a built-in 10MB memory, which — if not enough — can be supplemented with a MicroSD card. Other specifications include seamless tri-band GSM network connectivity, as well as Bluetooth and EDGE. Total talk-time is approximately two and a half hours, or equivalent to 250 hours on standby. Battery-time is optimized for playing music, which is great for this multimedia phone. It can play music for about 13 hours straight and still leave you enough power to make voice calls.
If you are looking for an affordable and stylish mobile phone that has all the basics (but nothing more), the Samsung J700 may be sufficient to satisfy. However, its media and connectivity features are not spectacular. Clearly, this mobile phone is meant for users who prefer simple phone functionality in a compact design rather than the full capabilities of top-of-the-line multimedia phones.
