Samsung Galaxy Portal mobile phone deals An Affordable Android Phone

Samsung’s Galaxy Portal provides a mixed bag as far as features and goodies go. While it provides a decent camera, its Chrome Lite browser, 3.2 touchscreen, and Android operating system, it has a few flaws that may be a turn off for some.

Appearance:

At first glance, you may assume that the Galaxy Portal certainly has an interesting exterior design. Available in white or black, its curved edges and diamond shaped menu button are vaguely futuristic looking. However, there are decided disadvantages to having such a crowded keypad—the diamond is fiddly and difficult to use, while the other buttons are arranged too closely together to press easily. At 120g, it may be a bit blocky and clunky for some as well. Fortunately, its touchscreen is big and bright and responds quickly.

Its 1.5 Android operating system may be a disappointed for some, especially when compared to phones with more up-to-date versions. However, for some users, having an older model isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Unfortunately, those who like flashier widgets and features will find themselves disappointed, especially as it’s dated enough that some of the applications at the Android Store may be too advanced to be compatible with it.

Camera:

The Galaxy Portal’s camera is a bit of a letdown. With 3.2 megapixels, autofocus, and 4x digital zoom, it has some redeemable qualities, but it’s disappointingly slow, and the lack of a flash results in downright rotten photo quality in darker conditions. Even bright photos look gritty and washed out. Its video recording capabilities are fairly basic as well, with a video streaming option as well as recording. However, strangely enough, it only seems to be compatible with MPEG4 formats.

Sound:

Fortunately, its sound quality is quite good for both talking and listening to tunes. The mobile also comes with a 3.5 mm headphone jack, allowing you to listen with your favorite headphones. Its music center is a bit bare bones, but provides the basics, including a music library, a music player, and mp3 ringtones.

Internet Connectivity:

With Bluetooth, wi-fi, and HSDPA, the Galaxy Portal is able to keep you connected almost anywhere. Other goodies include predictive text, Google Talk instant messaging, SMS, MMS, and a fairly capable email client. Its Chrome Lite browser is especially impressive looking on the Galaxy Portals bright, beautiful touch screen, which fortunately makes browsing much easier.

Memory and Talk Time:

Unfortunately, the Galaxy Portal has a pathetic battery life, but this is to be expected with a screen that big and so many battery leeching features. With heavy use, you’ll need to keep your charger on hand, but with moderate use you should get around forty-eight hours worth of fun before it’s time to charge. With only 180 MB of memory, you won’t be able to store much, but it comes with an extra 1 GB of memory via a microSD memory stick to open up a bit of extra space. Overall, however, its ultimately disappointing.

Verdict:

Considering its price, it’s not a big surprise that the Samsung Galaxy Portal should be a bit lacking in some areas. However, if you’re looking for an Android phone with a gorgeous screen at a price you can afford, this may be a good bet for you.
