The Power Of X
We were surprised to see a more angular shape in the X3, after becoming accustomed to the curvy Nokia’s we have been seeing of late. Bold and robust, with a black and red/blue colour finish, the new handset is a sliding model with a metallic-finish keypad that slips out from the back of the phone.
The neat and tidy aura about the handset may not compare to the highly sophisticated X6, but the classic design leaves little to be desired in terms of looks. In fact, the outer layer of this attractive handset masquerades several inner build issues, and to be truthful, we can’t help feeling that perhaps the manufacturers felt the same way.
Can’t see? No, me neither… Possibly the most disappointing feature of the phone is the screen, which comes at a rather cramped 2.2-inches. Sunlight legibility is dreadful, as are the viewing angles. View the phone from any other direction than right in front of it, and it’s guaranteed: you’ll see nothing but a colourful blur. Even when looking at it head-on, the contrast of colours is very disappointing.

Getting in to the groove
The music player is without doubt the best application on the phone, providing a great user experience and fantastic storage space for all of your favourite tracks. It’s that good, it makes up for several of the more disappointing features. The sound is crisp and clean, making playing tunes aloud an absolute joy.
As expected from a phone that specialises in audio, the quality of the sound is second-to- none. Frequency and distortion levels are amongst the best in class, whilst the great little features that allow you to toy with equalisation really give you control over what you listen to.
Camera and connectivity The 3.2-megapixel camera comes without LED flash or auto-focus, making it fairly basic in terms of picture quality. On the upside, there are several customisable features – allowing you to experiment with images that you take. Video recording is no better – and is best avoided. The recordings taken are reminiscent of those seen on phones a couple of years back, which doesn’t bode well for Nokia in terms of progressing with the times, so to speak.
The connectivity options on the X3 do little to impress, but rather fall short with the features you would anticipate from a low-end phone. EDGE and GPRS are both supplied, and Bluetooth 2.0 is also catered for. There’s nothing particularly negative to say about internet access via the phone, but equally, there are no outstanding features.
All-in-all, the X3 is a handsome phone very much focused on music. If that’s all you want it for, then you’ve found the handset for you. However, if you are looking for an all-purpose mobile with a good camera, a variety of connectivity options and an attractive interface – perhaps you should look elsewhere.
The first addition to the new XSeries family, and we have to say – we thought we’d be seeing a little more ’star quality’. Its musical prowess may well make it a good buy for anyone on the look-out for a smart, media-purpose handset, but the poor camera, basic build quality and disappointing sliding function left us disappointed. A phone with music on its mind – but not a great deal else.
