With the sudden influx of touch screen phones in the last year, Nokia have aimed to design a phone that does everything but iron your trousers. Could this be the new iPhone?
Once again, Nokia have decided to release a phone featuring a QWERTY keyboard, which greatly enhances text messaging and web browsing. The apparent disadvantage of this is the keyboard doesn’t slide out all the way, making it a little bit difficult to access all the keys. Also, the extra weight it adds to the phone, making it appear bulky and quite undesirable. However, the plastic finish does slim it down and looks just as good as a metal finish. The vibrant 3.5-inch display gives your photo collection a makeover with its WVGA resolution, making every snap look professional. The only downside to the touch screen is its lack of sensitivity and the need to poke the screen to get it to respond, rather than a simple tap.

As far as external controls and inputs go, this phone has the works. Unfortunately, this does lead to major overcrowding of inputs at the bottom of the phone, such as the 3.5mm audio jack, microphone input and the stylus holder. There are welcome added extras too, such as an easy to use kickstand which you can use to prop up the phone to watch your favourite videos.
Inside the phone
The actual software itself is very impressive. The new Maemo 5.0 interface works well, arranging the home screen into a simple and manageable collection of applications and widgets. The only thing that really lets this phone down is the screens inaccuracy, as you could be looking to open an app, yet you end up closing a previously opened one.
The graphics on this phone are pretty impressive, although the home screen wallpaper does tend to blur once you open up an app. Other than that, the 800 x 480 pixels seem to do their job. Overall, the phone runs quite smoothly, with hardly any delays (except with bigger apps that carry more data).
One of the best features of the phone is the Mozilla web browser, which works just its PC equivalent with automatic form-filling and visual history. It utilizes its WVGA resolution as it’s easy to zoom in and out of articles without losing focus. The phone handily comes with Adobe 9.4 Flash, making the task of viewing newer websites much simpler.
5-megapixels are not exactly exciting anymore, and the camera that comes with this Nokia isn’t anything to shout about. Disappointingly, you only get four settings (white balance, flash mode, ISO sensitivity and exposure compensation). However, unless you’re looking to buy a phone specifically for taking photos, then this won’t be such a huge disadvantage.
This latest Nokia is quite impressive, and the Internet features will entice those serious social networkers. In contrast, it will not appeal to the majority of consumers who will be left disappointed with the vast difference between the cost of the phone and what you actually get.
