An Outstanding Camera Phone
The Nokia N85 may seem quite similar to some of the other Nokia phones in their selection. However, it’s made its debut as an absolutely amazing camera phone, with a high quality sound system and lightning fast internet. Even better, it lacks many of the small glitches found in previous models.
Appearance: At 128g, it’s certainly a hefty slider phone, but it isn’t too blocky or bulky. Its exterior has a solid feel, and the shape is pleasing, both aesthetically and to the touch. Its. 2.6 inch 16.7 million colour QVGA screen is big enough and vivid enough to watch videos with ease. Unlike many models, the screen also allows you to control how bright it is.
The only downside to its design are the buttons. They’re rather small and flat. A bit more definition would have made dialing and texting much easier. However, the phone’s other buttons are easily accessible, and the keypad slides out smoothly thanks to its nifty toggle.
Camera:
The N85’s camera is one of the most advanced on the market today. With five megapixels, a Carl Zeiss Optics Tessar lens, 20x digital zoom, dedicated camera key, and an CMOS sensor for added quality, this is a camera that will have any shutterbug drooling. In addition to this, you also have an auto focus with an assist light function, a dual LED flash, and a sophisticated photo editing program that allows you to fix red eye, remove white noise, fiddle with tints and textures, and more. The photo gallery is pretty snazzy as well, with a Navi wheel for scrolling. The slide show features Ken Burn effects as well as amusing sound effects.
When it comes to recording videos, the camera has interesting features in this regard as well. The main camera, for one, has an 8x digital zoom while the front camera has 2x digital zoom. The camera also features a video stabilizer to prevent jerkiness and bumpiness, a video light, video streaming, and blogging options for both videos and photos. Video chats are also available. TV Out allows you to transfer your videos to your television.
Sound:
For a camera phone, the N85 has a high quality sound system, featuring a music player with playlists and equlisers. Also included is an FM Radio with RDS, a Nokia internet radio, dedicated volume and music keys, 3D stereo speakers, a stereo microphone, and options for audio and music streaming.
The phone has excellent sound quality when it comes to making calls as well. You also get to use several handy features, such as voice commands and voice dialing.
Best of all, it comes with a 3.5 mm headphone jack, allowing you to use your favourite headphones.
Internet Connectivity:
When it comes to internet connectivity, you have a variety of options available, including 3G HSDPA, Bluetooth, a micro USB, EDGE, and a WLAN wi-fi. Its quad-band technology also ensures that you can use the phone anywhere on earth. Users will also like the GPS, AGPS, and Nokia Maps 2.0 for getting directions on the go.
The email client also allows for attachments and filtering as well as SMTP, IMPA, and POP formats. If they can get past the tiny, flat buttons, texters will enjoy SMS and MMS. The predictive text may help assuage this somewhat.
Memory:
74 megabytes may not seem like a lot, but you can add up to eight gigabytes of additional memory through a microSD memory stick. When it comes to talk and standby times, you have a variety of diverse options to consider, including 6.9 hours of GSM talk time, 6 hours of VoIP talk time, 363 hours of GSM standby, 172 hours of WLAN standby, and even 30 hours of music playback time, to name a few. The battery life is also pretty impressive for a phone with so many programs on it.
Additional Features:
Users will enjoy embedded and downloadable games as well as Java games. There are also several convenient features, such as Flight Mode, an option that allows you to write in your organiser, listen to your music, and play games while on an airplane. The conference call allows you to talk with up to six people at once. Call log, call waiting, call hold, and call divert makes it simple to keep your calls organised.
Verdict: This is a perfect phone for camera enthusiasts and music lovers. Sure, it could use a Xenon flash instead of a LED flash, and eight megapixels would have been better than five, but its camera is of such high quality that these minor quibbles don’t matter. Our main disappointment was the flat keypad and somewhat flimsy material.
