At first the Nokia N79 may just look like another run-of-the-mill candybar phone. However, this mobile has more than it seems, including a 5 megapixel camera, a fairly large storage space, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
Appearance:
If you’re wrinkling your nose at its simplistic appearance, Nokia has you covered. The phone comes with a variety of colourful battery covers with one interesting feature: the phone is designed to alter its theme to match the cover colour.
Its 2.4 inch 16 million colour QVGA screen comes with a light sensor as well as features to control the screen’s brightness, resulting in vivid, impeccable footage. It also comes with a motion sensor that changes the screen from landscape to portrait and back again depending on how you hold the phone.
At 97g, it’s also incredibly slender, allowing you to fit it in your back pocket if you like. The designers obviously had this in mind, as they ensured that other features, such as the camera’s lens, isn’t damaged when the phone is tucked away.
As for user interface, the phone’s S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 is quite user friendly. Combine this with large, accessible navigation keys and a nifty click wheel, you have a phone whose many features are easily reachable.
Our only qualm is that the number pad is disappointingly flat and hard to press. Users with larger fingers will find this especially difficult.
Sound:
When it comes to providing high quality sound, the N79 aims to please. Its music player supports MP3, AAC, WMA, and other formats. It’s also pretty sophisticated in comparison with other phones, complete with a playlist, an equaliser, 3D stereo speakers, and even album art display.
You also get to play with MP3, AAC, and polyphonic ringtones as well as an FM radio with RDS as well as Nokia Internet Radio.
The phone also allows you to issue a variety of voice commands and comes with a stereo microphone.
Its crowning glory, however, has to be the 3.5 mm headphone jack, which allows you to use your favourite headset rather than what comes with the box.
Camera:
This mobile has a camera that could hold its own against many other camera phones. It also comes with a stabiliser, a light, and scene mode to make sure you capture smooth, crisp images. Options such as video streaming, video blogging, and the ever popular TV Out make it easy for you to quickly upload your videos to the web.
Connectivity:
With its quad band and WCDMA technology, you will be able to enjoy this phone wherever you go. Incidentally, the phone comes with Flight Mode, allowing you to turn off the wireless portions of the phone, allowing you to play games and listen to music while in the air.
You also get a variety of internet connection options, including 3G HSDPA, Bluetooth, EDGE, WLAN Wi-fi, and a micro USB. Browsers include the Nokia browser with mini maps as well as ones in HTML, XHTML, and WML.
Its email client is also fairly handy, with wireless email support, email filtering, and the ability to read and store attachments. Texters will enjoy SMS and MMS. The text to speech message reader and predictive text may also make using the infuriatingly flat keyboard a little bit easier.
Memory and Talk Time:
If the 50 megabytes of memory isn’t enough, you can also enjoy the 4 gigabytes found on the microSD. This card also supports up to 8 gigabytes. Combine this with 5.5 hours of WCDMA talk time and 406 hours of WCDMA standby time and you have a phone that you won’t have to charge too often.
Verdict: The Nokia N79 is perfect for users who like having a variety of sophisticated features at their fingertips. New users may be presented with something of a learning curve, but its user friendly interface makes up for this. Its awesome sound system, camera, and unique little details such as the battery covers, make this a phone definitely worth considering.
