A Stylish Slider Phone With Desirable Features
With its slim, attractive design and variety of coveted goodies, the Nokia 7230 is definitely worth considering. However, this phone possesses very few innovative or original features. For its price range, we would expect something much flashier.
Appearance:
The 7230 certainly gets points with appearance. Available in pink or black with chrome and silver accents, its curvy shape, finger friendly buttons, and textured rear makes it a joy to look at and hold. Its slide-out keypad moves smoothly and closes with a decisive click. Its buttons could be a bit more finger friendly, however, and there are bits of it that feel cheap and plasticky for all it’s tried to achieve a chic, futuristic look. To top it off, its 2.4 inch 262K colour TFT screen is bright and crisp, though a bit on the small side.
Its Series 40 operating system is easy to use and fairly responsive, fortunately, but many users find it boring in comparison to flashier, more convenient systems.
Camera:
Unfortunately, its camera is decidedly bare bones, with a 3.1 megapixel camera and little else. Its camera key and series of capture modes makes it interesting to play with, but the quality is rather poor, largely in due to its lack of a flash. Stick to bright places when using this camera, and even then photos may be rather grainy. Anything dimmer will be nothing but noise and shadow. Its video recording can capture up to 15 frames per second, which admittedly does look nice on the phone’s screen. If you manage to take passable pictures, you also have the option of uploading directly to Flickr or Ovi.
Sound:
Similarly, there isn’t much to see regarding music related goodies, but at least the sound quality is decent. Features include a music player, an FM radio, and mp3 and polyphonic ringtones. Fortunately, it also has a 3.5 mm headphone jack, allowing you to use your own headphones. That aside, it’s enough to provide you with the absolute basics for listening to tunes, but little else.
Internet Connectivity:
The 7230 provides you with some quality internet connectivity options, including quadband technology, 3G, Bluetooth A2DP, EDGE, and GPRS, but its deplorable lack of wi-fi may be a deal breaker for some. Also available are SMS and MMS, though its tiny, flat keypad may make for clumsy typing.
A notable addition regarding internet goodies would have to be its downloadable games. These include Bounce II, Snake III, Sudoku II, and several others. While it’s certainly nothing mind blowing, it’s nevertheless a good way to pass the time while on the bus or a train.
Memory and Talk Time:
With 45 MB plus 2 GB via a microSD card, the phone doesn’t provide much in the way of memory storage capacity. Similarly, with only 5.5 hours of talk time and 370 hours of standby, this is a phone that will keep you chained to your charger. These are numbers we would expect in a much beefier phone with a bigger screen.
Verdict:
If you want a pretty mobile with a few interesting features along with calling capability, the Nokia 7230 may be ideal for you. However, if you’re a gadget nut who can’t stand the lack of camera flash, wi-fi connectivity, or other basic necessities, you may want to look elsewhere.
