Classic in Every Sense
The Nokia 3110 Classic is a very basic mobile phone. Gadget aficionados may marvel that such a basic phone is still being manufactured. Fashionistas will probably gloss over it in favor of the new line of designer brands. However, this does not mean that the Nokia 3110 has no features, nor that it is quite ugly. In fact, for an inexpensive mobile, it’s a quite substantial unit that will last longer than most high end, high fashion phones that are all the rage today.
Far from being unattractive, it has a simple, yet exquisite design, a sturdy candybar with a polished black finish. Looks quite chic, actually, and it’s not called Classic for nothing. It’s also non-obtrusive, weighing an easy 87 grams and, being a mere 109 mm tall and 46 mm wide, the 16 mm slim phone fits comfortably in your purse or pocket, but not so unimposing that you may forget it’s there. It has a beautiful TFT screen with 262 thousand colours at 128 by 126 pixels. The handset itself is quite user-friendly, especially the keypad, with its keys properly spaced apart, preventing you from pressing the wrong buttons as you would be doing on most Nokia keypads.
Since you’re most likely after the basic call and SMS functions, you’ll be pleased to know that aside from SMS, MMS and an email function with attachments, the 3110 Classic is also outfitted with the Nokia Xpress Audio Messaging function, fitting in well with the other audio/voice features such as Push to talk, Voice Commands, enhanced Voice Dialing, voice recorder and an integrated handsfree speaker. Connectivity comes big time on this mobile, equipped with Bluetooth, infrared and USB.
At a GPRS class 10, you can connect to the Internet with EDGE and HSCSD, and surf easily using the XHTML browser. And as the integrated camera and music player is now de riguer in all mobile phones, the Nokia 3110 Classic has them too.
The 1.3 megapixel camera with 8 times digital zoom is obviously not going to make decent night shots, but then lots of high end phones without installed flash (and not even those with basic LED flash) take decent night shots either. It does take beautiful day and outdoor shots, though. Same goes for its video recorder.
The Nokia 3110 Classic also has its own substantial music player, which plays most audio formats, and an FM radio. You can even arrange playlists, although limited only to one artist and their albums per list. Still, that’s a lot better than random mode, or having to keep forwarding to the next tune when the current one ends. The internal memory of the 3110 Classic is only 9 MB, but the mobile does allow for a microSD memory card with a capacity of up to 2GB. That’s a lot of music you can take around. The 3110 Classic is also able to play MP3 ringtones, aside from 64-voice polyphonic ringtones.
The best thing about the Nokia 3110 Classic is that it works hard and it works well. While many gadget lovers will be trading in their hanging not-so-smartphones in for the next technological update every few weeks, you’ll treasure your 3110 Classic for years to come. It’s not called Classic for nothing.
