Slim, Cheap, and Sensible
The Nokia 2630 is a positively miniscule mobile with a variety of fun features. While its size and price make it an attractive deal, there are several things about this phone that may turn you off.
Appearance:
The 2630 is certainly an itty bitty mobile, at a slim 66g. It hosts a simple, candy design with plastic casing. This, in addition to its slim size, makes handling it a dubious experience, as it feels rather fragile. However, its 65K colour TFT screen provides sharp, bright detail and works well in outdoor conditions, though some say the colours are a bit lackluster.
As for texting, its number pad features large, responsive buttons. The menu keys are also fairly straightforward and easy to navigate. User interface is also simple to use, though it can run slowly at times. Those who work on an O2 network have also complained of numerous crashes.
Sound:
The 2630 provides remarkably clear sound quality and has a few interesting features one wouldn’t expect to see on such a small phone. These include an FM radio, a one touch radio access key, a hands free speaker, and the options for polyphonic and mp3 ringtones.
However, you are limited to a Nokia headset, which may annoy some. There have also been numerous complaints about the sound quality of the ringtones.
Camera:
The phone’s VGA camera meets the absolute minimum requirements. It possess video capabilities, a 4x digital zoom and a dedicated camera key, but no flash, no shutter, no autofocus—not even a simple photo album. (Though there is the option to save the picture as a wallpaper or screensaver.) However, if you’re just looking to snap the occasional picture on the go, this may not be much of a problem. You’ll do best to stick to will lit areas, however, as taking pictures in even dim areas are liable to come out fuzzy and dark.
Internet Connectivity:
If you want to surf the internet, the 2630 gives you a series of limited options. You have only Bluetooth® available to you as a way to stay connected. GPRS, in comparison to other services such as 3G or EDGE, may seem rather slow when it comes to processing data. Its dual band technology limits you to using the phone in only specific areas.
Texting options include SMS, MMS, and instant messaging. Your email comes in POP3, IMP4, and SMTP formats. You also have Nokia Xpress Audio Messaging at your disposal, but when you consider that you could achieve the same purpose by simply calling your mate, in the long run it seems rather redundant. However, if you dislike texting in general, this option might work better for you for leaving messages.
Memory:
The storage capabilities of the 2630 don’t offer much, at 11 megabytes of memory. Worse still, there is no option for adding additional memory. This leaves you with enough space to carry very little indeed.
Its six hours of talk time and 312 hours of standby make for adequate usage, but you’ll be charging often.
Additional Features:
The 2630 has a variety of interesting features, including preloaded games and Java™ Games, an advanced calculator, a converter, language support, and even an expense manager to help you keep track of your phone payments.
Verdict: Its slim size, cheap price, and minimalist features will appeal to those who simply want to talk and text and take an occasional snapshot. However, considering its tendency to lag, crash, and freeze up under certain circumstances, you may do better to search elsewhere.
