Motorola Release the DEXT MB220, But Can It Bring Them Back

It is no lie that Motorola have needed a kick up the hoo-hah for a long time and it is hoped that the DEXT MB220 can bring the brand back after it has been sitting in the corner for a long time in silence.

The DEXT MB220 is a big phone, there are no two ways about it. This is because of the fact that the 3.1-inch touch screen is precariously resting on top of a full QWERTY keyboard which makes a guest appearance from the side of the handset. With most phones, you can find that you feel rather hard done by when you are using one without the other (like when you are on the touch screen without a keyboard, for instance); however, Motorola have defied this by giving you a fulfilled experience whichever option you choose.

 
 
A full QWERTY keyboard is no use in a phone if it is hard to use and leaves its users susceptible to making a high amount of mistakes. Thankfully, the rather large nature of the mobile phone has meant that the keyboard can be given a generous amount of space. One criticism for the keys of the QWERTY is this: whilst the keys don’t lack in width, it could be said that they lack in height a little bit.

Sometimes, the ergonomics of the phone can be a little bit challenging, with the camera shutter button as well as the power button being in an awkward place for those with smaller hands to reach. Additionally, Motorola have made the fatal mistake of not including a cover for their microUSB port, meaning that some of the more careless mobile phone users amongst us will inevitably get their ports clogged.

Interestingly, there is a little light for your notifications from any software that you have running on its Android operating system. However, the user interface that Motorola have provided over the top can make running programs like the music player a little slow at times.

There are little things that make the DEXT MB220, one of them being the way that all of your contacts are backed up to your computer in the event of that rainy day. This is similar to Microsoft My Phone, in some respects. These contacts are excellently presented on the MB220, and this is because you can link a contact with their Facebook, MySpace and Twitter profiles and phone number in one place. From there, you can see all of the activity that you have shared with that contact recently.

Unfortunately, some of the downsides of this phone are the most common things which are separating the latest smartphones from the crème de la crème of the mobile phone elite and the theme seems to be revolving around flash. This is because despite the excellent Android browser, there is a lack of Flash support; and despite the impressive 5-megapixel camera, there isn’t any flash for night-time photography.

It is a fun and a quirky phone to use, with the fundamentals of Android extremely visible in the user interface of the DEXT MB220. Hopefully, this will signal the way for Motorola becoming the comeback queen of the mobile phone world.
