A Practical Camera Phone

The LG KC780 Reina is a camera phone that was obviously designed with user friendliness in mind—its features make it apparent that this was a phone made for new users or those who want specific features. However, this phone may fall decidedly short of its goal.

Appearance:

Though it’s 119g, this phone is a bit too bulky to be able to fit comfortably in your pockets, though it’s small enough to fit in a briefcase or purse with no trouble. Its 2.4 inch TFT 262K colour screen provides bright, clear footage, and users will be delighted to find that the buttons are large and easy to manipulate.

However, its basic slider shape and silvery casing make it a phone that obviously wasn’t created with stylishness in mind.

 
 
Sound:

The KC780 gives you quality sound while speaking or listening to music, though the loudspeaker is obnoxiously tinny. Your media player allows you to make playlists, though it only supports MP3 and AAC formats. The FM Radio DS is also a nice touch. Polyphonic and MP3 ringtones complete the package.

However, you’re stuck with the set of headphones that come with the box, as it has no 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Camera:

The camera was designed to be the crowning jewel of the phone. Unfortunately, it doesn’t shine as much as we thought it would. For an 8 megapixel camera, the quality is surprisingly sub par.

It comes with a variety of coveted features, such as Schneider Kreuznach optics, an image stabiliser, auto focus, face detection, and smile detection, but its basic LED flash results in picture quality that suffers in low light. Even pictures in bright conditions aren’t as vibrant or as clear as other 8 megapixel phones. The video recording features work well enough, and show up especially well on the phone’s screen.

Internet Connectivity:

When it comes to staying connected, the KC780 gives you a variety of options, but not nearly as many as more high end phones. Its tri band technology allows you to use your phone almost anywhere. While the Bluetooth, A2DP, EDGE, GPRS, and USB options for connectivity work well enough, we would have liked to see 3G and Wi-fi as well.

As for features, this phone gives you a variety of fun texting options, such as SMS, EMS, MMS, and predictive text, as well as a straightforward email client that allows you to see attachments in PDF, XLS, word documents, and Powerpoint. Combined with its extremely finger friendly buttons, texting will definitely not be an issue with this phone.

While there are other goodies available, such as embedded games as well as downloadable ones, the lack of GPS in what is supposed to be a high quality phone was ultimately unsatisfactory.

Memory and Talk Time:

While you only get 6 hours of talk time and 450 hours of standby, the upside to this phone is that its storage capacity is enormous, with 140 megabytes, plus an 8 gigabyte microSD.

Verdict: Despite its disappointments, this isn’t an unusable phone. However, shutterbugs will be ultimately disappointed in the camera’s quality. Its other basic features, while operable, do not make up for the camera’s anticlimactic nature.
