A Disappointingly Basic Budget Phone

A common problem with budget phones is that they often sacrifice quality in the name of staying cheap. Unfortunately, in the case of the LG GS101, this is exactly the case. If you like your phones very simple and straightforward, this might be the ideal phone for you. However, if you’re someone who likes a bit more meat on their phones, you won’t be surprised when you learn many similarly mined users are disappointed in the phone’s overall design.

When it comes to looks, the GS101 is rather plain. Available in black or white, it has a simple alphanumeric keyboard keyboard, and a 1.5 inch display. On the plus side, it’s slim and slender, the screen is quite bright and vivid, and for all its design is a bit dull, it has smooth lines and curved corners. At 65g, the phone is incredibly light as well. Alas, it’s rather cheap and flimsy feeling as well. Its keypad is rubbery and difficult to press.

That aside, its interface is refreshingly simple to use in a world of overcomplicated smartphones. The downside is that it’s somewhat dull in comparison to other phones. Fortunately, there are few signs of bugs or glitches, and little to disrupt your navigation experience.

Alas, the phone doesn’t have much in the way of features. Along with lacking even a basic camera and a 3.5 mm headphone jack, there’s not even a music playback feature to speak of. However, if you can handle a phone without these features, you may not mind these absences. However, you’re not left entirely without fun: you do get a few interesting games, though nothing new or flashy. Another feature we liked included its “fake call” feature, which allows you to pretend to receive a call in order to get yourself out of unwanted situations.

When it comes to internet connectivity, you don’t get a whole lot to work with. It lacks 3G. wi-fi, and Bluetooth, though USB, EDGE, and others. However, its limited connectivity isn’t as painful when you learn that there isn’t much to work with, especially considering the phone has no browser on top of everything else. With dual band technology, you won’t be using this phone on big business trips either. Its predictive text is somewhat helpful, especially considering its difficult keypad.

In most cases, when a phone has so few features, its upside is that the battery life is much longer, as it doesn’t have dozens of flashy features to bog it down. While this phone won’t provide you with days of use, at 630 hours of standby and four hours and thirty minutes of talk time, you’ll get a decent amount done between charges.

What is the GS101 good for? Its price, sturdy design, and basic features make it an ideal spare phone. If you want a mobile that is mostly for just communicating and you’d rather not risk losing or breaking your more expensive mobile while at a party, this is an ideal match. It’s also great for storing in your glovebox for emergencies. After all, if you’re broke down on the side of the road, you’re not going to care if your phone supports a camera or an internet browser. The LG GS101 gives you exactly what it advertises. However, if it’s a bit too spartan for you, there are plenty of other similarly priced phones on the market that are a bit more better equipped.
