A Highly Original Touch Screen Phone

Though fairly pricey, the LG GD900 Crystal is definitely one of a kind. Its unique design, 8 megapixel camera, Dolby sound system, and speedy internet all make it worth the price as well.

Appearance:

The LG GD900 is truly remarkable in that it contains not one, but two touch screen surfaces: its three inch TFT 16 million colour auto rotating touch screen, and then its keypad. Sliding out smoothly, at first it only resembles a transparent piece of glass with plastic backing, but a few touches reveal the keypad display as well as a variety of pretty lights and effects.

Designers kept usability in mind as well—while some may blanch at the idea of a keypad with no buttons, it’s surprisingly easy to use, with no trace of sluggishness. However, given that it has so many touch sensitive surfaces, it’s no surprise that this phone can be a bit oversensitive at times, which makes performing complex actions a bit difficult.

UI includes the ever-prominent LG issue cube, which users tend to either love or hate. While the phone’s features are fairly user friendly, the sheer number of widgets and programs and features may be overwhelming for many.

 
 
Sound:

When it comes to sound quality, the LG GD900 doesn’t disappoint. Its music player, FM radio, and ringtones are all very nice, but what makes it truly shine is its Dolby Sound. This program is designed to turn your headphones into a top-notch sound system, eliminating distortion, crackling, volume issues, and other mishaps. Combine this with a 3.5 mm headphone jack and you have a sound system that, while pretty basic, still covers all of the essentials and more.

Camera:

Its 8 megapixel camera packs alot, with auto focus, LED flash, and a Schneider Kreuznach lens. However, despite its flashy features, it takes surprisingly rotten pictures. Even in well lit areas, the photos are lifeless and dull. In lower light, photos tend to come out grainy, even with its LED flash.

Its editing options make up for this somewhat, allowing you to tweak and crop and adjust colours as needed. Video capabilities also include its own separate camera plus 3G video call options, which is also a nice touch.

Internet Connectivity:

Its quadband technology keeps your phone working no matter where you travel while its broad range of internet connection options let you keep in touch, including 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi, USB, Bluetooth, EDGE, and GPRS. Also included is SMS, EMS, MMS, and instant messaging, all of which include predictive text.

Checking email is also relatively easy. Users will also be pleased with the document viewer, which is compatible with Word, Excel, Powerpoint & PDF.

Its six hours of talk time and 300 hours of standby provides you with enough time to use the phone without charging constantly, but you might want to keep it close at hand regardless, considering its many features.

Verdict:

The LG GD900 Crystal is truly a wonder. It’s absolutely amazing design combined with shockingly easy usability is a pleasant surprise in itself. Its lightning fast internet, and quality sound system also make it a keeper. However, those expecting crystal clear quality from the camera may be disappointed.
