A Quality Email Phone
When most users think of email related phones, they immediately imagine the Blackberry. The HTC Snap takes this to a whole new level–not only have they managed to create a quality email client, but they’ve acquired a similar look to the Blackberry as well. Whether or not this will impress users remains to be seen, however.
Appearance:
The HTC Snap has a lot of the same aesthetic features that made the Blackberry so popular, what with its curved edges, finger friendly QWERTY keyboard, and slick 2.4 inch 65K colour TFT LCD screen. Its LED backlight ensures that you get a bright view each time. However, its smaller size means that navigating the user interface, internet browser, and other features will have a bit less pizazz. It’s also kind of bulky at 120g.
Users tend to love or hate the Windows Mobile Professional 6.1 Operating System. Many hail it as clumsy to handle or just plain old in comparison to other interfaces, while others prefer it over other user interfaces. Also included is a navigation wheel that is also similar to a Blackberry’s design.
The keyboard is truly a stroke of genius, however. Not only is it neat looking, but each key is individually raised on small rounded pads that are both easy to press and comfortable.
Camera:
Its camera is pretty bare bones, with only 2 megapixels and a fixed focus feature. Its lack of a flash and autofocus will certainly put a damper on your photos. However, if you’re just looking for something to snap the occasional quick photo with, the camera works. It’s recommended that you stick with brightly lit areas, however, to minimize noise and shadows. The camera also has video recording and playing capabilities in a variety of formats, but it’s not the best quality in the world.
Sound:
The HTC Snap’s sound quality is passable, both with music and for phone conversations. However, if you’re looking for a phone with music features, this one definitely isn’t it. While there is a music player available, as well as MP3 and polyphonic ringtones, you won’t find much else. HTC hasn’t even included a 3.5 mm headphone jack. On the plus side, there is plenty of storage available, but with so little available, you’re likely better off simply using an mp3 player.
Internet Connectivity:
With quadband technology, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, GPRS, and EDGE available, this is a phone that will keep you connected almost anywhere. Other goodies include a GPS with Google Maps as well as a variety of downloadable games. However, can its email match up with other business phones?
Its email client has a handy new software called the Inner Circle. This is activated via a button on the keyboard and acts as a special place to keep your contacts’ messages, emails, and more. This is especially important when dealing with busy business accounts, but you can use it to keep track of family members, roommates, and friends as well.
In addition to this, you also have instant messaging, MMS, and SMS to play with, and considering the Snap’s awesome keyboard, you’re in for fun.
Memory and Talk Time:
While the Snap has adequate storage at 192 megabyes of RAM and 256 megabytes of ROM, at only 5 hours of WCDMA talk time and around a day’s worth of battery life, you’ll need to charge it often. Considering that this phone doesn’t have a lot of the battery sucking features of others, this is a considerable disappointment.
Conclusion:
This is a great phone for keeping email and texting. However, when it comes to originality, the HTC Snap falls decidedly short. Its lackluster operating system, mediocre music and camera, and forgettable screen may also be a turn off for some.
