A Reasonably Priced Touchscreen Mobile With Several Features
The HTC Smart is a budget phone that doesn’t look or behave like most budget phones. Its attractive design, nifty Sense interface, and wealth of social networking apps and widgets makes it definitely worth looking into. However, the dark side of all budget phones is that in order to stay at prices that won’t stretch your wallet, they can’t have everything.
Appearance:
With its 2.8 inch 262K colour TFT LCD QVGA touchscreen, sleek black casing with metallic accents, and overall sleek and slender shape, the HTC Smart’s is certainly aesthetically pleasing. Its large and lovely screen is colourful, crisp, and dazzling. We do wish its button design was a bit more thought out, as its current design is a bit baffling, but at least its touchscreen is relatively easy to manipulate, especially for a resistive screen. Even texting isn’t a difficult ordeal.
Its Sense interface gives the mobile a sophisticated mien as well. Some features include seven home screens, a wealth of widgets, and lots of interesting icons and avatars to keep you from growing bored. Overall, the user experience is one that is relatively smooth and simple, with very little sluggishness.
Sound:
While hardly a music phone, the HTC Smart gives you enough to be able to enjoy your tunes without fuss: a 3.5 mm headphone jack, an FM radio, a decent music player, and a variety of ringtones. Sound quality overall is crisp and clear for calls as well. Fortunately, you have more than enough memory to store various playlists, and synching them from your computer to your phone is a relatively painless experience.
Camera:
Its 3 megapixel camera doesn’t come with a lot, but its LED flash and fixed focus should keep your snapshots from being too blurry or grainy. However, it’s best to stick to well lit situations regardless, as the flash may not be strong enough to penetrate gloomier areas. Its video recorder and player also takes a decent clip, though we discovered that, unlike with photos, you can’t automatically send these to your favourite social networking sites.
Internet Connectivity:
Unfortunately, its internet connectivity is one of the things the HTC Smart had to cut in order to keep prices low. While you do get 3G HSDPA, Bluetooth A2DP, GPRS, and EDGE, its deplorable lack of wi-fi may be a deal breaker for some. There’s also no GPS, which means no handy maps to help you find your way around. However, there are a variety of instant messaging options as well as push email.
In regard to social networking, it’s something of a mixed bag. It’s nifty Friend Stream aids you in getting live updates from Facebook and Twitter, but the options for synchronizing your buddy lists are extremely limited and you can’t do much with Youtube either.
Memory and Talk Time:
256 MB of RAM is more than enough to store your pictures and tunes without trouble. It also comes with a microSD card if you need more. Unfortunately, with only 7.5 hours of talk time and 450 hours of standby, this phone isn’t like others in that it will last awhile without needing a charge.
When it comes to budget phones, the HTC Smart certainly provides more features than most. Its user friendly interface, gorgeous screen, and thoughtful inclusion of essentials such as the 3.5 mm headphone jack all make it an overall good phone. However, it’s flaws are irritating enough that they might lead users to seek other budget phones.
