A Well Equipped Smart Phone With a Refreshingly Low Price

If you’re the sort of user who likes to have a phone with a little bit of everything without it being too complex, the HTC Gratia is the perfect match for you. This isn’t an uncommon request among users who want goodies without the downside of a constantly depleted battery or an operating system that clunks. Fortunately, the Gratia is a nice mid-range phone that has a mixed bag of desirable features.

Available in black, green, or white, the Gratia weighs 115g and fits comfortably in the palm. It’s also small and slender enough to fit easily in a back pocket. While it’s not so sturdy that you feel like you could drop it and still feel assured that it won’t get scratched, it’s well built enough that it doesn’t feel cheap or flimsy while using it. Its 3.2 inch capacitive screen is wonderfully bright and vivid as well. We also liked its trackpad, which is finger friendly and sensitive.

Combine a Google Android operating system with HTC Sense and you have a great phone for navigation. While its processor isn’t as fast as other models, the screen is responsive and the menus and interfaces are wonderfully simple to use. With seven homescreens, you can arrange your widgets and apps according to type, theme, or activities. All in all, a breeze to use.

 
 
When it comes to staying online, you have plenty of options to consider, including Bluetooth, wi-fi, HSDPA, 3G, EDGE, USB, and more. Its quadband technology also allows you to use the phone wherever you travel, and its GPS will take you where you need to go. Again, it’s amazing screen and interface ensures that typing and texting is made fun. We particularly liked its Friend Stream feature, which integrates all of your contacts from Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, and more into one simple locationg. You can also do the same for your email client. However, this has a few kinks to work out—we noticed,, for example, that we couldn’t access the social networking site directly; instead, we were taken directly to its site instead. Android means you get lots of Google features, such as Google Maps or gmail.

Its five megapixel camera doesn’t have much to it that’s showy or flashy, but it’s not completely unusable either. Its biggest flaw is its lack of a decent flash. While pictures taken in brighter settings do well enough, anything taken in darker areas will turn into a blurry, grainy mess. The same principle applies to its recording capabilities—it turns out choppy and slow every time.

Its music related features aren’t much, but you have the basics, including a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a quality music player that supports a wealth of formats. Its sound quality is also quite good, with no signs of crackling or tinniness. It’s nothing to replace your mp3 player with, but it’s good for long rides on the train.

The HTC Gratia is the perfect mobile for those who want high range features for a lower price. While its lack of a camera phone and lackluster music features mean that it’s not quite as shiny as the more expensive phones, its chic looks, great screen, sound quality, and excellent internet make for a decent phone indeed. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you’re on a budget.
