A 2nd Generation Blackberry with Touch-Sensitive Screen
Since taking the world by Storm, RIM have been beavering away in the background to try and create a worthy successor to the name. The Blackberry Storm2 9520 was announced in October 2009, and in true RIM fashion, scarcely a month had passed before the handset was released to it’s eager fans.
This is the 2nd generation of touch-sensitive screen Blackberries - with updated keys on the front (they’re touch sensitive too this time) and a screen which no longer uses SurePress technology, thereby improving the comfort when using the display.
The Storm2 also now offers Wi-Fi, unlike it’s predecessor and faster processing speed as well as other upgraded features.
At 160g in weight and measuring 112.5 x 62.2 x 14 mm the Blackberry Storm2 9520 is a weighty handset for its size. It works on both 2G and 3G networks, on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 on 2G and HSDPA 2100 on 3G.
The new unveiling is the TFT capacitive touch screen which displays 65K colours in a screen size of 3.25 inches (480 x 360 pixels). It features an Acceleromoter sensor for auto-rotate, allowing quick change between viewing of portrait vs landscape images and data.
It will make you aware of an incoming message or call by means of vibration or MP3 ringtones. Handsfree is possible, as the phone has incorporated into its build a speakerphone and 3.5mm audio jack and voice memo/dial capability.
Driven by the BlackBerry OS (operating system), the phone handles data using class 10 GPRS (4+1/3+2 slots, 32-48 kbps) and EDGE (236.8 kbps) and on 3G, operates using HSDPA at 7.2Mbps and HSUPA. WLAN support is in the form of standard Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, and Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and microUSB v2.0 complete the package.
The Blackberry Storm2 comes with a built in internal memory 2 GB in size which can be boosted by use of microSD card.
At 3.15 MP, the single camera will take a picture 2048 x 1536 pixels in size. The autofocus and image stabilization features and LED flash will help your photography, and the Geo-Tagging facility enables you to share your photos with others. Video is also possible.
For purposes of communicating with others, the Storm2 enables messaging via SMS, MMS, Email and Instant Messaging. The browser understands HTML, there is GPS capability with A-GPS support and BlackBerry Maps, and yes - there are games with more downloadable. The handset comes dressed in black.
For paper-pushing, the Blackberry Storm2 9520 offers a Document Editor which is able to cope with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files. The media player installed plays MP3/WMA/AAC+ and the video player will recognize MP4/3gp/H.264/WMV.
Ths phone also has the ever-important Organiser and Voice Memo/dial.
This handset, like all other Blackberry handsets, is expensive, however it does allow for a wide range and decent period of internet surfing, media enjoyment and chatting. The standard Li-Ion 1400 mAh battery - from fully charged - will allow up to 305 hours standby on 2G and 280 hours while operating in 3G mode. Talk time is also quite impressive with up to 5 hours when using 2G and up to 6 hours on 3G.
