A Bold Move from Blackberry
In the coming weeks, there will be a few more additions to the Blackberry family, with one of them being the Blackberry Bold 9700. As this model was prototyped, the name of it chopped and changed to suit Blackberry’s overall mood, but now things are looking more official. This review looks at what the Bold 9700 has to offer over other smartphones in the market.
First of all, what makes this Blackberry stand proudly away from its brothers and sisters are a few subtle differences which have been made to the phone’s appearance, making it more functional. The trackball which has become synonymous with Blackberry phones is no more in the Bold 9700, with a touch-sensitive trackpad gracefully taking its place. The overall reaction to this so far is that it is was needed and that it makes using the Bold 9700 a lot easier.

One thing that we really weren’t too sure about was the leather backing which was seen to the Bold 9700. The Jury is currently out on this one and there may be another change or two in advance of its official retail debut in November. So – here’s a closer scrutiny of the specification that comprises the Blackberry Bold 9700.
There’s a lovely backlit keyboard which will look great when you are tinkering away on the shiny, black keys from the full QWERTY keyboard that the Bold provides, with the hi-resolution screen that Blackberry is famous for looking glorious in the latest model. There are not many differences aesthetically that result in the Bold 9700 standing away from the other models of the Blackberry range, with the key differences coming from within the phone’s hardware (this safe design has been seen as ideal by many, who are looking for a more traditional-looking Blackberry to place in their pockets).
The connectivity is the best in show, but you would expect this because of the phone’s nature as a companion for a business partner. This smartphone has full access to the Blackberry App World, too, which can be quite tantalising if you are the type of person likes that little bit extra on their phone.
When it comes to multimedia playback, there are some good elements to the Bold 9700, however the fact that there is only partial XviD and DivX support is quite disappointing. All of this said, the phone does fully support the earlier versions of DivX – however, this could be as much use to you as a chocolate teapot.
All in all, it is a nice effort from the team at Research In Motion which has made the Blackberry Bold 9700 happen. There are small things which could make this phone better, but overall it is the type of phone that businesspeople need in order to have the power they need to do what they do best whilst they are on the road. What’s more, it is reassuring that Blackberry is bold enough to do something different without losing its direction.
