When most people think of Blackberry mobiles, they envision stern business phones with complex email clients and conference call capabilities. While the Blackberry Curve 8250 has these features and more, users will be happy to know that its designers have taken this phone in a new direction, gearing the device toward consumers who want something a bit more casual and fun.

Appearance:

Its 2.6 inch TFT 65K colour screen, convenient trackpad, and immensely finger friendly keypad are all traits that users bound to enjoy. AT 106g, it’s still fairly light and easily storable without feeling flimsy or cheap. The addition of its rubber edge makes it easier to grip as well. Its outer casing even comes in a variety of colours, including black, purple, teal blue, and more.

A note on the keypad: While each individually raised key makes The Blackberry 8520 a joy to text with, dialing numbers is made somewhat complicated. There have also been mixed opinions regarding the user interface. Some find themselves a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of features and options available, many of which may seem unnecessary. It’s not impossible to figure out, but many agree that features such as the home screen takes some getting used to.

Sound:

The Curve 8250 has great sound quality as well as the much coveted 3.5 mm headphone jack. Unfortunately, its location makes it somewhat awkward to listen to. As for music, its media player is fairly basic, but you do have the option of letting the music play while other applications are running. Combine that with a set of media keys and MP3, MIDI, and polyphonic ringtones, and you have a lot to enjoy.

Camera:

The phone’s 2 megapixel camera isn’t anything groundbreaking, but its 5 x digital zoom, flash, viewfinder display, and video recorder will provide you with what you need to snap a quick picture on the go. It would generally be wise to stick to well lit areas, though, as the flash isn’t powerful enough to give you better quality in shadowy or dark settings.

Connectivity:

The Curve 8250 provides you with a wide range of ways to stay connected, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, GPRS, and EDGE. Also included is quad band technology, allowing you to use the phone no matter where you travel. The phone’s hypersensitive trackpad makes for easy browsing, though the tendency to have to zoom to read or click certain links was an annoyance for some. Its HTML browser is also pretty basic, and some may lament the lack of a GPS. (The Blackberry Maps are a nice alternative, however.)

However, taking advantage of its IM, SMS and MMS with the phone’s awesome QWERTY keyboard is an absolute pleasure. You can also create up to ten different email accounts, all of which have the same convenience and quality that Blackberry is famous for.

Memory and Battery Life:

With 408 hours of standby and 4.5 hours of talk time, you won’t have to worry about charging very much between uses. Its 256 megabytes of memory allows you to store your emails, pictures, songs, ringtones, and more with room to spare—and if for some reason you need more, you can make use of an MicroSD for additional space.

Verdict: While this is not a phone you’ll want beginning customers using, it’s certainly a breath of fresh air in comparison to all of the business phones out there. Its finger friendly keyboard, attractive design, and variety of features makes it definitely worth a look.
