The iPhone’s SMS Security Loophole

iPhone SMS Flaw
Don’t Fall Prey to the iPhone’s SMS Security Flaw

Editor’s Note: Apple issued a 3.0.1 iPhone update for this security flaw less than 24 hours after it was demonstrated. Kudos to Apple for their swift response.

Do you have the privilege of owning one of the world’s most well known smartphones… the iPhone? If you do, then this article applies to you. As from Thursday 30th July 2009, two researchers showed the world the flaw that they have found in the SMS system set up by Apple on the iPhone.

If you receive a text message after the 30th July and you own an iPhone then be aware, as if once you open the message it should contain a single square character of some sort, then you are strongly advised by researcher Charlie Miller to turn off your device as quickly as humanly possible.

This plain and simple symbol is a warning to you, to tell you that it is highly likely that someone is trying to or has already tried to use this new bug, created by Miller and his partner cybersecurity researcher Mulliner, on your mobile phone. This new finding was made public at the Black Hat cyber security conference which was held in Las Vegas.

It is said that this bug could quite possible virally infect iPhones through the SMS facilities found on mobile phones …continue reading →

Mobile Phone Consumers with Bad Credit Look for a Plan B

SIM-only mobile phone deals
Should you choose SIM-only, pay as you go or contract when you are looking for a new deal?

The recession has bitten a lot of people here in the UK and now, as people are coming round to renewing their contract or are looking to get a contract for the first time, some are getting rejected.

This is all because of a thing called a credit rating – and some mobile phone consumers have found that their credit rating is rather bad, meaning that mobile phone companies aren’t too enthusiastic to give them credit on a long-term deal.

It is really bad news not only for consumers, but for mobile phone companies, too. They have seen the amount of credit they have available to give their consumers dry up, which means they are now having to be very picky on who they give contracts to and have to see who are the best candidates to pay up at the end of each month.

Some people aren’t even bothering with contract deals anymore because they are simply too expensive and people are trying to save as much money as they can during these tough times.

Enter stage right the SIM-only contract, which …continue reading →

Is Nokia Opening Fire at the iPhone 3G S?

Nokia N97 versus Apple iPhone

One of the managing directors of one of the most powerful mobile phone companies in the world, Nokia, has launched a scathing attack as the company launches the Nokia N97 as a rival to the ever popular iPhone 3G S, released last month.

The managing director recently stated that he believes that the Nokia N97 will perform better in the smartphone market because it has stronger features and a better functionality than its nearest rival that is offered by iPhone.

Mark Loughran said this: “The new iPhone seems to have the same design and colour, upgrading from a sub-standard two-megapixel camera to a still low 3.2-megapixel camera, and is probably a disappointment for many people given the high tariff and lifetime ownership costs.” …continue reading →

118 800 - Love it or Hate it?

118 800 Directory
It seems that the directory service 118 800 has had a surge of popularity recently – for all the wrong reasons.

The directory service is one of the only services which offer customers the chance to search for the mobile phone numbers of the people they are looking for.

Since its launch in June, many people have been flocking to the website in order to make their mobile phone number ex-directory – as it has been revealed that using the 118 800 service, people can obtain your number via searching for your name and location.

In the past few days, it was revealed by the directory’s parent company that the site was down after an overwhelming amount of traffic to unsubscribe to the service that people have been registered for by default.

Some people believe that the source of the surge was after a viral email began to circulate around the UK, after a special report about the service was broadcast on a BBC programme.

118 800 is available …continue reading →

How Will LG Fare Against Apple?

LG App Store
How things are currently looking on the LG App Store’s website

As Apple’s App Store turned 1 earlier this month, the popular electronics company LG has unveiled the latest competitor to Apple’s coveted crown as the market leader in the applications for smartphones market.

The LG Application Store (a longwinded name, but still) is about to launch officially to consumers in the Asian market, where the business will have its focus for the time being.

The reason the company have decided to do this is due to the fact that they do not want to unveil such a big investment globally in case the idea should fail. An international flop could prove disastrous for the electronics company, especially considering it is licking its wounds because of the recession.

Despite the apparent lack of confidence in the potential of a rival to Apple, LG have said that the objective of the LG App Store’s launch in Asia is to see whether or not there is a platform for expansion on an international scale towards the end of the year. There are condition plans for the development of the software in 22 countries at the moment.

It could be said that …continue reading →
